Such a beauty. This vintage set consisting of a large ceramic lidded tureen with four matching lidded soup bowls all in the shape of beautiful green artichokes just blows us away. Tureen has a cut-out space in the lid for the handle of your grandmother's sterling silver soup ladle (not included).

Made in Italy.  C. 1980s

Tureen: 12" wide x 9" tall (including lid)

Bowls: 5.5" wide x 3.5" tall (including lid)

In her excellent book, The Flavour Thesaurus, Niki Segnet discusses artichoke soup thusly: "In 1891 Anton Chekhov wrote to his brother complaining about the restaurants in Monte Carlo, 'They fleece one frightfully and feed one magnificently ... Every morsel is rigged out with lots of artichokes, truffles and nightingales' tongues of all sorts.' That artichokes have so frequently been paired with the most expensive ingredients - truffles and foie gras - is testament to the thistle's extraordinary attraction. Even today they're served together in the best restaurants. Three-star French chef Guy Savoy has a signature dish of the earthy, if not very down-to-earth, soup d'artichaut à la truffe noire, served with a brioche layered with mushrooms and truffle butter." Yum.

Please note that this set is vintage, and has been used. We do our best to choose only the best items for our vintage collection, but if you are looking for new and shiny, this is probably not for you.
