Yoga, by Ernest Wood. Born in 1883, in Manchester, England, Ernest Wood went to India as a young man, and became deeply interested in the Yoga and Vedanta philosophies. He learned Sanskrit in order to be able to read the original texts, and studied closely with philosophers, yogis, and scholars. He later became president and dean of the American Academy of Asian Studies in San Francisco and was president and founder of School of the Woods, a Montessori school in Houston, Texas, upon his death in 1965.

This book, first published in 1959, is a thoughtfully written primer and description of the practice and philosophy of yoga. With chapters ranging from the basic Why and How of Yoga and the Goal of Yoga, to the Ethics and Morality of Yoga and Yoga and the Intellect. He includes in depth discussions of breathing techniques, postures, the use of sounds, latent body power and vitality, and much more.

With a glossary of Sanskrit words, an index of original Sanskrit books and treatises quoted, and a contemporary bibliography of books on yoga in english.
